Welcome to the 2024 LDWG Wikidata Working Week!

This event is co-sponsored by the MLA Professional Development Workshops Subcommittee (of the MLA Education Committee) and the MLA Emerging Technologies & Services Committee.

Join LDWG members on Monday, April 15th (2:00-3:30 pm EDT) for a synchronous introductory event on Zoom. We'll walk through the basics of Wikidata, share some tips, and introduce several projects that we have set up. There will be time to create your own Wikidata account, make your first edit, and ask any questions. (This session will be recorded, in case you are unable to attend live.)

Then, for the remainder of the week, participants can work on their preferred project at their own pace—once you enroll in the Wikidata event dashboard, any edits made throughout the week will be tracked toward our project totals. We'll gather again on Friday, April 19th (2:00-3:00 pm EDT) to look at what we have accomplished, share some data visualizations, and hear questions and reflections from participants.

LDWG members will be available via email and Slack throughout the week to answer questions and provide support. We will also convene a few casual working hours via Zoom at different times during the week (see schedule below), offering shared space to co-work, troubleshoot any issues that arise, or discuss anything related to linked data more generally.

Getting Started[edit]

During Monday's opening session, we will review how to create and account and enroll in the project, but feel free to follow the steps below ahead of time if you want to get oriented on your own. Or if you missed Monday's session, you can enroll at any point during the week!

  • If you already have an account, click "Log in with Wikipedia" and enter your credentials. You will be prompted to grant permissions to outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org. Click "Allow".
  • If you do not have an account, click "Sign up with Wikipedia" and follow the prompts to create an account.
  • We won't be using all of the Event Dashboard functionality (like assigning items, etc.)—the goal is just to track edits, so once you are enrolled, you won't need to visit the Event Dashboard again

Working Week Schedule[edit]

All sessions and working hours will take place at the same Zoom link.

Opening Session[edit]

Monday 15 April 2024, 2:00-3:30pm EDT (recording)

LDWG members will offer an introduction to Wikidata and structured data generally, discuss the projects that we will be working on throughout the week, and demonstrate how to set up an account and make basic edits. There will be plenty of time for questions, as well as a breakout room for troubleshooting any technical issues that may arise.

Working Week Projects[edit]

We've set up three different projects to work on this week, each one focusing on a different kind of Wikidata editing and offering a topic and level of difficulty. Please feel free to edit across any of the projects throughout the week as you are interested and able!

  1. Art song project: Enhancing Wikidata items for art songs (difficulty level: easy)
  2. Music libraries and archives project: Creating/enhancing Wikidata items for music libraries and archives (difficulty level: medium)
  3. Sheet music publisher project: Creating/enhancing Wikidata items for sheet music publishers (difficulty level: advanced)

Art song project[edit]

We will be working from this spreadsheet of existing Wikidata items for art songs. Some of these existing items already have full data while others need updating.

General workflow:

  • Put your name in the "claim" column to make sure nobody else is working on the same item
  • Open and review the Wikidata item and add/revise statements according to the suggested data model below
  • Use reference sources such as Grove Music Online, MGG Online, IMSLP, Lieder.net, etc., to find information about the songs
  • If a particular song is not in our spreadsheet, i.e. does not already exist in Wikidata, you can create an item for it. But please search Wikidata first to make sure it wasn't missed.

Data model: art songs

Label (English): the most common name that the song would be known by an English-language speaker. The 'English' label does not necessarily need to be an English title if the song is well-known by a foreign-language title, e.g. "In der Fremde" by Schumann.

Description: a short phrase designed to disambiguate items with the same or similar labels

Music library project[edit]

We will be working from this spreadsheet of music libraries and archives compiled from MLA members' profiles and RISM. The institution names are divided into three groups: Group 1 = names that include "music library"; Group 2 = names with "music" only; Group 3 = all other names.

Note: Since these names were pulled from member-supplied data, they may not reflect the most-exact or official names of the library, archive, or music collection. If only the name of a college or university is listed, additional research may be required to determine the name of the music collection on campus.

Begin by choosing a library or archive with which you are most familiar, like where you work or have worked. Then move on to other libraries of interest. If your library is not on the list, add it.

General workflow:

  • Put your name in the "claim" column to make sure nobody else is working on the same item
  • Search Wikidata to discover if the item already exists
    • If item exists: review the Wikidata item and add/revise statements according to the suggested data model
    • If item does not exist: create a new item and add statements from the suggested data model (see FAQ for guidance on constructing label, description, and aliases)
  • Use the library's website, RISM, and other resources as appropriate to complete statements
  • Add the Wikidata URL to the "wikidata link" column when the item is complete

Demo walkthrough: create a single library item

Sheet music publishers project[edit]

We will be working from this spreadsheet of existing Wikidata items for Sheet Music Publishers.

This project will require significant outside research since many of the items on the spreadsheet are stub records. Find information about these sheet music publishers in reference sources, on websites, or on pieces of sheet music themselves.

General workflow:

  • Put your name in the "claim" column to make sure nobody else is working on the same item
  • Review the Wikidata item and add/revise statements according to the suggested data model below

Help & FAQ[edit]

  • Find links to join the #wikidata-event-2024 channel in the MLA Slack workspace in an email to registrants on 4/12/24 and 4/15/24
  • Visit the Resources tab of this project page to find videos and links to basic Wikidata how-to instructions
  • Email mla-wikidata-event-2024@googlegroups.com to ask a specific question; LDWG members will be monitoring this inbox throughout the week and will respond promptly
  • Attend a working hour! We'll be happy to work through and questions together during these casual sessions throughout the week

Guidance on constructing labels, descriptions, and aliases:

Label: The label is the most common name that the item would be known by. It does not need to be unique, in that multiple items can have the same label, however no two items may have both the same label and the same description. See Help:Label for more info.

Example: William and Gayle Cook Music Library

Description: Descriptions begin with a lowercase letter except when uppercase would normally be required or expected. They are not sentences, and should not end in full stops.

  • Common formula for a location is [type of location] in [subregion], [country].

The location formula is a good starting point, but don't feel bound to it. See Help:Description for more info.

Example: music library in Bloomington, Indiana, United States

Aliases: Aliases are alternative names for items that are placed in the "Also known as" column of the table on top of every Wikidata item page. All of the other common names that an entry might go by, including alternative names; acronyms and abbreviations; and alternative translations and transliterations, should be recorded as aliases. See Help:Aliases for more info.

Example: Indiana University Music Library, IU Music Library, Cook Music Library
