Wikidata:Data round-tripping

From Wikidata
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Data round-tripping consists in the reciprocal synchronisation of data between Wikidata and the external databases to which it links, with main focus on the correction of errors found by Wikidata users in external databases.

An effective process of data round-tripping would improve significantly the quality of both Wikidata and external databases and could be a good base for establishing deeper collaborations between Wikidata and external databases themselves.

Current situation and goals[edit]

Wikidata uses error-report URL or e-mail (P10923) to store the information about which way can be used to report errors to the institution managing the external database.

However, in many cases the institutions just don't have a structured way to receive error-reports.

Our goals include:

  • setting up a structured way to indicate on each property how errors in the external database can be reported
  • evaluating if setting up an apposite tool for sending error-reports to the institutions would improve the situation (phab:T312718)
  • convincing more institutions to adopt a structured way to receive error-reports

How do I report an error?[edit]

If you find a mistake in an entry of a database having an external-ID property on Wikidata:

  1. check in the property's talk page if someone has indicated a way (usually an e-mail or a webpage) to report errors to the institution managing the database; you can also have a look at Wikidata:WikiProject Authority control/Error reporting procedures
  2. if you don't find anything, you can try to search in the database if there is some error-report way
  3. if you still don't find anything, you can try to use generic contacts to reach someone in the institution managing the database and ask them if they can set up some error-report way
