Definition[edit]
It seems at some times to be an instance of video game genre (Q659563), and other times just video game design (Q12336660). I don't know whether it's really a genre or not, but a lot of other items like Mini World: CREATA (Q48938271) want to use it that way, so I've put it back. Ghouston (talk) 03:52, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

- @Ghouston: First of all, yes, open world is not a video game genre, it is a gameplay mechanic (a kind of gameplay concept in other words). It's like "hit points" or "experience levels". There is no such thing as a "open world video game" but "video games that have open world". Secondly, the game may be open world, but does not say anything specifically about the gameplay. Super Mario 64 (platformer), Grand Theft Auto III (action-adventure game) and Deadly Premonition (survival horror) have all been described as open world games. So yeah, at this point we can confidently say that there is no singular style of "open world video game". Regards Kirilloparma (talk) 01:54, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
